This is Sergeant Kilowog of the Green Lantern Corps. He is one of my favorite Lanterns. I wanted to go for a more mature take, as I was hoping to set a tone with his appearance. I also wanted to experiment with how difficult it would be to draw a character in different layers of clothing/armor, and it turned out to be harder than I thought.
The initial nude drawing of him was not too difficult, but I realized that drawing the suit over it was probably more work than if I just started from scratch. The fact he is not wearing clothing in the first picture was for a few reasons: I am still practicing anatomy, I wanted to focus on his form, and it was meant to instill that my version of Green Lantern would be mature.
As for the design of my version of Kilowog, I looked at some comics and Green Lantern: The Animated Series for reference. Ultimately I went with my own design for him, with a bit more loveable of a head rather than the scary pig-like creature he is sometimes depicted as. The suit is different, too. This is the first Kilowog suit to have a cowl, and I like how it turned out. Maybe I will get to draw a Kilowog comic for DC someday, like Batman: Damned but for Green Lantern.
Thank you for viewing, I'll speak more about the character below.
Kilowog is sometimes shown as a ruthless, military alien, but I prefer him when he is more so the tough best friend of the group. Different artists also interpret his build differently, as sometimes he is heavy-set, while sometimes he looks like a body-builder. I decided to make him muscular and with a large frame. I took some inspiration from Halo for the armor. I think painting the midsection plating black made him more striking.
Lastly, a live-action Green Lantern show is on the way to HBO Max. Kilowog is said to be in it. Ideally, I would want him to be one of the main characters, and perhaps even made with practical effects. Green Lantern, to me, has the potential to be the Star Wars of the DC Universe, and Kilowog is like its Chewie. Or maybe its Zeb?
Next Lantern I draw will probably be Razer (a Red-Lantern). I'd also like to do John Stewart at some point.
